Great India Restaurant

January 29, 2006

This will be a short review, because there isn’t really much to say. On the whole, Great India is your average, run-of-the-mill Indian restaurant. Short Exact ordered the saag paneer,

which featured an overwhelmingly large amount of saag, and an almost microscopic amount of paneer. The dish was (too) liberally salted, but even underneath the salt there were no inspired flavors lurking: mostly just blandness. The naan fared better – we would call it good – but it doesn’t stand out. Meanwhile, the mango lassi was as weak and runny as Frosty the Snowman caught in a Saharan summer. Again: no inspiration. We certainly don’t mean to imply that Great India is bad — it isn’t. The service was fairly attentive and had a good mix of warm and professional. The restaurant was clean and reasonably-decorated, and the food wasn’t terrible: just average. If you’re in the immediate area and are in need of an Indian fix, you won’t have an awful experience here; but then again, you won’t have a stellar one, either. And if you aren’t already in the neighborhood, it certainly isn’t worth the trek to the Outer Avenues just to dine here: instead, we would recommend a visit to one of the Richmond’s more excellent eateries. We’ll see some of these restaurants appearing on this site soon, brought to you by Short Exact – so stay tuned!
